My job

People ask me what I do. It is pretty detailed so I decided to post here the duties of my appointment:

  • MAJOR DUTIES:
  • Retrieves records from holdings in response to researcher requests. Delivers records to research rooms. Refiles records according to established procedures.

  • Provides reference service to the research public as to the substance of NARA self-service holdings, general search paths for these records and the use of research room facilities, equipment, and finding aids (inventories, microfilm descriptive pamphlets, catalogs, indexes, and automated finding aids). Ensures the proper registration of researchers, furnishes records to researchers, and maintains circulation records. Provides referral through professional staff as appropriate. Responds to written inquiries on general reference orientation topics.


  • Provides information to the research public in person, in writing and by telephone on a variety of Federal records. Provides educational presentations on standard research methodology for self-service collections and/or the handling and use of materials and equipment.

  • Participates in reference projects involving arrangement, description, and preservation of research room finding aids.

  • Enforces and instructs the public in reference related regulations and procedures including those relating to research room procedures, reproductions, preservation, security and the use of equipment. Monitors the handling and use of record material, acts to prevent loss or damage, and monitors the condition of records to ensure preservation. Applies access regulations relating to security-classification, copyright, donor and other restrictions.


  • Advises researchers on types of reproduction available for records and copying procedures on self-service copiers, monitors the use of copying equipment and advises researchers on procedures to obtain authentications of records and prepares them as appropriate.


  • Diagnoses problems with research room equipment (microfilm readers/printers, film viewers, videotape players, printers, copiers); arranges for repair and maintenance and regularly inspects equipment.
