THE PAINTED VEIL

Such movies intrigue, delight and move me....I love period pieces (The English Patient).

Beautiful costumes and breathtaking scenery drawn you in from the first moment.
The story tackles true intimacy within a loveless marriage and tackling the traditions of a culture wary of foreigners.

The Painted Veil envelopes you into the world of the shy and bookish Dr Walter Fane, a bacteriologist. He pursues Kitty Garstin, a typical hautish woman of that time...with his lustful emotions. These feelings overcome his usual sensibilities and they marry. The couple moves to Shanghai where he works in a government lab. However after Kitty has an affair Walter demands that she follow him into the interior (or soon face a divorce) so that he can assist in a raging cholera epidemic caused by unsanitary conditions.
This movie does draw you into the emotions of a marriage...the intensity of emotions. Love, honor, betrayal.

bit of a chick flick but I'm suitably intrigued to take a girl when/if it comes out as a film?
